UNESCO seeks nominations for UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2012

Nominations are invited by UNESCO, for next year’s UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Member States of UNESCO, regional and international organizations, and professional and non-government organizations that have been doing significant work in Journalism and freedom of expression are eligible to send in their nominations.

The prize was introduced to honor Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was assassinated. It main purpose of the prize is to honor and felicitate any individual, organization or institution that has accomplished some outstanding task to defend or promote freedom of press, especially in a dangerous or threatening situation. The nominations are open to all countries.

With the help of the prize, journalists, who have done significant work in the field of freedom of expression, are able to gain international recognition and acclaim that they duly deserve. Every year, a prize ceremony is held to honor the chosen winner, who receives a sum of US$25,000.

Next year, the prize distribution ceremony will be held on World Press Freedom Day, which is on 3 May 2012.
