Objectives: ViiV Healthcare is focused on improving the healthcare and quality of life of people affected by HIV/AIDS. On the one hand, ViiV is at the forefront of pharmaceutical research and, on the other hand, the corporation supports community projects led by NGOs to tackle the stigma of discrimination, to prove essential services, and to engage with the lives of people affected by HIV. Positive Action was launched in 1992 and it has already funded projects in Africa, Asia, Europe and America.
Areas of Funding: Funds are given to NGOs and community-based organisations working with communities affected by HIV. There are 2 main grants given every year; the Community Grant and the Action for Children Grant. Community Grants are administered by local operating companies while the Action for Children Grant is given once a year to projects selected via an open call for proposals.
Geographic Focus: No geographical restriction. At least 80% of available funding will go to projects targeting Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular to the priority areas of Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Angola, Burundi, Chad, Tanzania, Kenya and India.
Programs or Prizes:
The Positive Action for Children Fund was launched in 2010 to encourage community response to the World Health Organisation’s strategy for the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV. In 2013, the call for proposals under this scheme asked for projects to suggest how to advocate for gender equity in education and health at the community level, how to prevent unintended pregnancies, how to promote early infant diagnosis and how to ensure that HIV negative women remain negative.
The Positive Action Community Grants are given to community-based organisations to support programmes that are innovative, sustainable, and that produce tangible results for the communities affected by HIV. These grants are given by local operating companies to ensure that grants go to organisations active in the communities. To contact your local operating company and ask to be considered for one of these grants, consult this list.
Overall, successful projects must demonstrate to have a clear patient-focused and family-centred approach, to improve the participation of people affected by HIV in the life of the community, to address and solve the stigma of discrimination, to generate demand for sexual and reproductive health services, to develop integrated approaches to education, prevention and care in sexual and HIV health.
How to Apply Information: Concept Notes for the Positive Action for Children Fund are accepted via the online system once a year.
