To emphasize on food security and eradication of poverty, the United Nations has marked 16 October as the “World Food Day” and 17 October as the “International Day for the Eradication of Poverty”.
The World Food Day is celebrated to honor the inception of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) which was an effot of 42 countries and was marked as an important step forward in man’s perpetual struggle against hunger and malnutrition.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly, designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: The theme for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2015 is “Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination”.
