October 11 is celebrated as the International Day of Girl Child to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world. The United Nations has considered The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030 as the theme for this year.
The international development community will be assessing the progress made under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since 2000 after 15 years of implementation. Girls who were born around the year 2000 have now become grown up as adolescents and those girls born this year will become adolescents by 2030 until when the new targets would be fixed.
Keeping this view in mind and emphasizing on the the importance of social, economic, and political investment in the power of adolescent girls, this year’s theme has been dedicated for adolescent girls.
Another important day this week is the International Day of Rural Women to recognize “the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.”
