The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Programme Head – Governance of Africa’s Resources Programme (GARP), based in Cape Town, South Africa. The duration of the position is of two years (extendable).
GARP provides advisory and research support to governments and other stakeholders on governing Africa’s natural resources to maximize their equitable and sustainable development contributions.
SAIIA is South Africa’s premier research institute on international issues.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Programme Head, under GAR programme will perform the following functions-
- Lead regular field research, policy convening and dialogue activities in the three focal areas of mining and development, energy and the green economy, and the governance of ecosystems and commons resources (including fisheries and forestry).
- Work closely with local, regional and other international partners, including through the SAIIA Change-Makers forum and the Governance of Africa’s Resources Research Network (GARN).
- Facilitate capacity-building, knowledge-sharing and the up-scaling of research outputs beyond the respective national levels.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A relevant and outstanding post-graduate educational qualification, preferably at Phd level.
- Outstanding writing, research and time management skills.
- Strong management and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to manage a diverse group of researchers in the field and their outputs.
- Well-established networks related to the aforementioned research areas, including with business, research institutions and policy makers in Africa.
- A minimum of five years of project fundraising experience and budget monitoring skills are essential.
- At least 5 years of management experience in a think tank environment as well as relevant computer skills and own transport.
- A proven research track record on the intersection between governance and the sustainable management of Africa’s resources.
- Expert knowledge on at least one of the four resource sectors that the programme studies, i.e. oil, mining, fisheries or forestry and the intersection with water resource management and climate change.
- A solid understanding of cross-thematic interlinkages between mining and development, energy and the green economy, and governance of commons resources.
- Portuguese or French language skills would be an advantage.
