Civil society organizations and individuals working in Africa to advance the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) can apply for the $100,000 ONE Africa Award.
As efforts to eradicate poverty progress and new ideas introduced to bring about change across Africa, there are various NGOs and individuals dedicatedly involved in the processes. The ONE Africa Award provides an opportunity “to highlight the dynamism and achievements of African individuals and civil society organizations who are building a better future for their communities, countries and continent.” It “celebrates and bolsters innovative Africa-led efforts to help advance on or more of the Millennium Development Goals, the world’s blueprint to a better future.”
The award carries a cash payment of up to $100,000.
Individuals, organizations or other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the MDGs can apply for the award. “2010 qualified recipients will be engaged in advocacy to promote MDG attainment in health, clean water/sanitation, agriculture, education, gender, economic growth or employment generation for poorer communities. The organizations can be advocacy/pressure groups and think tanks engaged in governance related activities such as the monitoring of flows of resources and/or holding governments accountable to commitments to MDG attainment.”
2010 Award Criteria
- Innovation: Extent to which the individual/organization has designed and implemented an innovative advocacy program that employs new approaches to impact the MDGs.
- Results: Extent to which the individual/organization demonstrates and communicates their ability to impact and advance at least one of the Millennium Development Goals at a community, regional or national level.
- Scaleability: Ability of the individual’s or organization’s efforts to be scaled up and/or replicated by others.
- Accountability: The demonstration of strong accountability mechanisms used to receive community buy-in (i.e. community leadership consultations and assessments and transparency of operations).
- Partnerships: Extent to which the individual/organization has employed creative partnerships to achieve its goal and ensured coordination with other development actors. These partnerships may include public and/or private sector organizations.
Other Criteria:
- Organizations and/or individuals must be Africa-based and indigenous.
- Organizations must show evidence of success in previous projects.
- Organizations must show proof of funding support for previous project activities.

Africa’s biggest problem is corruption, I don’t know if you have hard a story about global fund money which was meant for the treatment of malaria and HIV/AID. How did Ugandans benefit from that funding?, we need justice to prevail over the misuse of global fund money.Afica will not come out of poverty with out proper and effective monitoring of funds.
We welcome all funds given to Africa meant for poverty reduction, but there is need to work with NGO’s which are directly working with communities and which allow direct participation of communities.
Two the issue of transparency and accountability is very crucial for effective and proper implementation of projects in Africa.
The most problem facing Africa corruption,i don’t know if you have hard of a story of Global fund money meant for malaria treatment and HIV/AIDS.How did Ugandans benefit, with out monitoring and proper use of funds,African will never come out of poverty.Children todate are dying of malaria,we need justice to prevail on this issue of Global fund.
current funding should target NGO’s operating in communities and NGO’S which allow communities to participate directly in their projects.We welcome all funds which are given to us to eradicate poverty but there is need for transparency and accountability for effective implementation of such projects.
Africa needs a concerted effort in development and good governance if we must meet the MDGs goals; this award is right step in a right direction.
