Catalytic Fund Call for Proposals: Youth and the City Challenges

The Cities Alliance, a global partnership for urban poverty reduction and the promotion of the role of cities in sustainable development has issued its second call for proposals under its Catalytic Fund.

The theme under which the funding would be provided is “Youth and the City: Challenges of and Visions for Demographic Change.”

The thematic call has three main objectives in line with the ‘catalytic’ nature of the Fund:

  • To raise awareness of the role of youth in urban development at a time when cities, grappling with an historic urbanisation process, appear ill-prepared to provide improved governance, meaningful representation, or economic and social roles for their youthful populations.
  • To select and support, both technically and financially, innovative youth-focused urban projects and to revisit traditional Cities Alliance areas such as city development strategies, slum upgrading and national policies on urban development with an emphasis on youth.
  • To provide a flexible platform for successful projects to develop peer-to-peer learning networks and to systematically extract and share knowledge that both informs and influences urban practices as well as policy dialogues at the local, national and global level.

The proposed project must be implemented in countries that are on the OECD DAC List of Aid Recipients.

Grant size requests must be limited to between US $50,000 – US $250,000.

The deadline for submission is 30 April 2012 at midnight (Washington DC time). For more information, visit this link.

    • The evaluation is a learning-focused evaluation, which will serve as an input into the ongoing discussions within the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on how best to promote private sector driven economic growth and employment. It should therefore distil key lessons learned regarding the strategies, approaches and methods used in the Neighbourhood Programme.
    • Encourage learners to develop healthy self-esteem including a respectful appreciation of their own and others’ individual, ethnic and cultural identity
    • Advance educational approaches and facilitate access to enhanced literacy for all age groups Disseminate successful program models, and promote innovation in a specific area of learning

    • It is expected that the initiatives will integrate Aboriginal knowledge systems; ensure meaningful involvement and decision-making of Aboriginal community, Elders, parents, educators and learners; and build capacity through collaboration, connection and partnerships that are sustainable.
    • Educational organizations with a demonstrated commitment and capacity for success in Aboriginal education, particularly in communities or regions with high numbers of Aboriginal students, will be given particular consideration.

    Food
Imagine seeing your children slowly starving… and having nothing to feed them. For countless destitute families, this is a grim reality. Your gift today will bring lifesaving food to hungry children and their families.
    Housing
For the poorest of the poor, “home” might be little more than a few sticks, mud, and scraps of plastic or metal. Your gift for housing will help provide a family with a safe, basic home and restore their human dignity.
    Water
Clean, safe drinking water is essential for life. In developing countries, access to safe drinking water can be limited, often resulting in serious illnesses and death. Your gift will help provide lifesaving water to those lacking clean drinking water and sanitation.
    Medical Care
In developing countries, hospitals and clinics often lack the most basic equipment and supplies to treat patients. Doctors and nurses often stand by helplessly, unable to administer lifesaving aid. Your gift can help provide items ranging from basic anti-diarrhea medicine to advanced medical equipment.
    Education
Unlike in the United States, education in developing countries is not free. Parents must pay for uniforms, books, school supplies and other necessities. Children too poor to attend school are often sent to work on the streets, and so a lack of education reinforces the vicious cycle of poverty. Your gift for education can help break that cycle and will benefit a child for a lifetime.
    Micro-Enterprise Development
Often, poor families are trapped in poverty because they have no viable means of earning income. What better way to help improve lives than to give a village the means to sustain itself economically? Your gift for a self-sustaining project will have a profound and lasting effect in the lives of those you help.
    11. Human resource development available:
Resource persons to train grassroots level organizers, NGOS, and development works.
    12. Staff:
Skilled and trained staff to work in the villages to promote people’s participation in the implementation of the programs.

I am delightd to have this news and will definitely go ahead submitting the concept for the City of Blantyre in my Malawi nation. I see a lot of youths loitering and making so much noise along the road or touting for minibuses. Such youths are actually growing and I am afraid what will happen after twenty-five years of age-may become thieves so prevention is better than cure. My organization called Young Enterprises is going to champion this.

  5. Tabula Robert says:

  6. wilhelmus says:

This is very welcome as many of the cities around the world are most poorly planned, and in Africa is now a mess, where even drainage system is always amiss.

I am now working on a proposal that would capture your total attention at all costs. Keep watching.

    Best wishes,

    Catalytic fund
