Unlike the Innovation Window, the Impact Window funding under DFID’s Global Poverty Action Fund (GPAF) is available to support locally registered civil society organizations in countries where DFID has a country office in addition to supporting “medium” sized UK-based not for profit organizations.
DFID has allocated 90% of the GPAF’s £34 million for the Impact Window funding aimed at funding poverty reduction initiatives which are directly linked to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and those projects which are focused on off-track MDGs will be given priority. Impact grants should be lower risk projects for work at greater scale to deliver real benefits for men, women, boys and girls.
Organizations can submit up to three concept notes in each funding round under this funding window. There is one funding round per year for Impact Window. NGOs can propose projects in a range from £250,000 up to £4 million for the life of the project. However, the annual value of all GPAF grants that you hold must be less than 40% of your organizational annual income.
Projects can be proposed for a period of up to 36 months in duration. In fact, the funding also allows organizations to hold a maximum of three grants at any time. These can be a combination of individual and consortium projects.
UK-based NGOs or locally registered civil society organizations in countries where DFID has a country office or in any of the bottom 50 countries of the Human Development Index can apply for this funding opportunity. To find out the countries where DFID has an office, visit this link or you can also download this document which has the list of eligible countries for the entire Global Poverty Action Fund.
A match funding of at least 25% is required for submitting the proposal.
Organizations which are actively involved in proselytizing, encouraging activities that may lead to civil unrest, linked to any terrorist organizations and practice any type of discrimination based on gender, disability, race, colour, ethnicity, religion etc. cannot apply. Also, think thanks, academic institutions, research organizations, DFID’s PPA partners, governmental agencies and inter-governmental organizations.
The deadline to submit concept notes under this funding window is 14 December 2010. For more information, visit this link.

Dear Sir/Madam,
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Debre Amin Abune Tekle Haimanot Church is planning to establish a hospital and medical college in Mekelle, Ethiopia, with a total budget of 1.5 million US Dollar that will basically serve the poor parts of the society in achieving MDG. The project is not for profit organization and it is accepted by higher authorities of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church including Abune Paulos, Patriarch Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church, President of World Council of Churches and by regional and national government authorities. The municipality provided us adequate land on free basis. Steering committee (from university, government authority, private sector and community) as well as project office is established. Also there is full support from the community. We want to have relationship with development partners especially with DFID for the establishment of the hospital and medical college and mobilizing resources (financial, material, technical and networking) for the construction of the project. Up on your request, we can submit the concept notes and possibly the project feasibility study, support letters, construction permit, soil test results, and other documents.
We are looking for your positive response.
We wish all the best in your future endeavor.
ICCF-SL is a newly registered not for profit making and non-governmental organisation in Sierra Leone a third world country. We work with marginalized rural communities like Bonthe Island and it environs (Bonthe District). We support people living in extreme poverty through education, skills training, agriculture and food security, human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness and education campaign, war and street children, orphanage homes, enviromental protection, etc.
We really appreciate the work that DFID is doing in Sierra Leone and the world as a whole.
Our problem is that we are a newly registered organization we will like to know if we can apply for the funding.
We hope to get a fruitful reply on this matter.
Best regards,
Abu Gbonda
Director, ICCF-SL
