Google has launched the $50,000 Map Maker Competition

The Google Map Maker Competition is for individuals above 18 years from any country (except the few ineligible countries identified here) to add universities, schools, hospitals and medical clinics with high quality into the Google Map Maker. These efforts from individuals can help in getting a donation of US $50,000 for UNICEF to implement a project for empowering young people in their country. The winning contributor will also be part of the VIP tour from UNICEF to visit local projects in his/her own country. In addition to this, the winner will also get an all-expenses paid trip to the Google Super Mappers 2010 conference.

According to the competition organizers, the mapping of universities, schools, hospitals and medical clinics will help humanitarian organizations like UNICEF to implement their activities in a better manner in the country of the contributors. “Having a complete, accurate and rich map on Google helps people in your community, businesses, tourism boards, civil services and even emergency rescue workers.” The winner will also get an opportunity to be a local hero for his/her own country with the efforts leading to the implementation of the technology-based program. The competition is open from 15 December 2009 to 31 January 2010. All those wishing to contribute should first get registered using the online form. The criteria to judge the entries:
  • Mapping quality: Mapping additions and edits must be accurate and detailed.
  • Mapping quantity: The more mapping additions and edits published, the better!
  • Moderation quality: Moderations of mapping changes must be polite, helpful, and correct.
  • Moderation quantity: The more moderations completed, the better!
