Human Rights Center for Human Rights Mobile Challenge

The Human Rights Center at the University of California, Berkeley has announced a unique Human Rights Center Mobile Challenge. In the present times, when human rights advocates, journalists and scientists have access to new tools such as cell phones, GPS, cameras, video, audio and SMS, there are also new ways expose war crimes and other serious violations of human rights and disseminate them around the world in real time. The new technology is an opportunity for the human rights advocates to document and disseminate information about human rights awareness happening across the world.

The Human Rights Mobile Challenge provides cash awards from $15,000 to $5,000 to three winners. Ten finalists will be chosen and will be invited at “The Soul of the New Machine: Human Rights, Technology and New Media” to be held in Berkeley from May 4-5, 2009 and will be given an opportunity to present their ideas, following which three winners will be selected by a panel of judges.
