IDRC Call for Proposals: Reducing Violence, Poverty and Inequalities

Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in partnership with the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) has announced a call for proposals as part of the Save and Inclusive Cities research initiative. This is a jointly funded initiative which aims to to build an evidence base on the connections between urban violence, poverty and inequalities. It also seeks to identify the most effective strategies for addressing these challenges.

The core objectives of this initiative are to:

1. Generate a better understanding of the relationship between urban violence, poverty and inequalities, and identify the most effective strategies for tackling these challenges;

2. Contribute to the shaping of theoretical and conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches that will guide future research on these issues;

3. Support a cadre of researchers, particularly in the Global South, in enhancing their skills to design and execute cutting edge, policy relevant, rigorous, and gender sensitive research projects in cities affected by violence in Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

4. To widely disseminate project- and program-level research results among local, regional, and international stakeholders with a view to influencing policy and practice.

Research projects funded as part of this initiative will be selected through this competitive Call for Proposals.

As a result of this Call, a series of grants of up to CAD 500,000 will be awarded.

Projects should be scheduled to be completed by April 2016, including all research activities and final reporting.

Grants of up to CA$500,000 will be awarded to carry out cutting-edge research in cities across Latin America and the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia.

  4. Barnabas Adey Fru says:

    PRTC Fonta is an NGO under the supervision of the Presbyterian Church In Cameroon to carry out humanitarian assistance in various domains, with funds mobilization independent from that of the Church.

    Its Mission is to fight against rural and urban poverty within the enclave masses, with a bias to the North West Region of Cameroon which is even marginalised.

    We have a long time experience of over 35 years that has witnessed great innovations as approach methods and disciplines.

    Some of our areas of intervention and experience include:-

    1. Food Security: People here live hand to mouth life, yet depend on the very poor, exhausted and sloppy soil and terrain. We consequently develop training interventions, material assistance, Education and cultural analysis and improvements. This aim at harnessing all that contribute to better realization of the farms and labour output. The benefit of which aid in hunger reduction, better socio-economic levels, child education, reduced crime and unity of the farm-family.

    2. Natural Resource Management and Environmental Protection. We mitigate climate change by supporting materially and financially, grass root people who are capable of making significant strides in this area. Support is mainly by developing educational and training programmes, extension activities which lead to settling up small and large forests around watersheds, grass fields and hillsides.

    3. Improvement of the Nutritional status of the poor and disadvantaged population. There is high malnutrition in the rural areas and the poor urban class. This is due to consumption of the wrong foods or a complete lack of it. The most affected are children from 0 – 5 years, pregnant women and the illiterate class, widows and HIV/AIDS infected and affected people. We therefore intervene with educational packages, group mobilisation for mutual benefits, special foods provision, cultivation of relevant food and special foods, educational campaigns especially in areas not covered by radio and television network, extension programmes are also a priority means of information spread. This leads to better health and better use of scarce resources.

    4. Health Education. With most areas in this region highly enclave, health centres if available hardly have required drugs, qualified personnel and accessibility. Hence the use of natural medicinal plants is very fashionable. Yet the scientific use is not known but the population with extension and educational packages and plants which serves as curative and first aid potentials. HIV/AIDS campaigns and micro enterprise development for infected and affected persons are our concern which has yielded much result. Linkages are also made with relevant quarters for more assistance through our grip of the grassroots population and our special relationship etc.

    5. We have had assistance from the Bread for the World Germany, Mission 21 Switzerland, Swiss College of Agriculture and presently with the Methodist Relief and Development Fund. MRDF England

    Looking forward to hearing from you soon, accept out very high regards.

    Dohquaah Peter Sama
    Administrator.
    PRTC Fonta
