Nominations invited for the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights

Sponsored by Association François-Xavier Bagnoud, HealthRight International, John Snow, Inc. and the Global Health Council, the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights provides recognition and honor to an individual who has worked on promotion of health and human rights. The award is named after Jonathan Mann, who dedicated his life to eliminate global poverty and social injustice and also worked as the director of the Special Program on AIDS from 1986 to 1990 at the World Health Organization (WHO). He was also one of the pioneers to advocate for recognizing health as one of the basic human rights of an individual and he also helped fight the fear surrounding the AIDS epidemic.

The award will be bestowed to individuals with the following criteria:

  • Practical work in the field and in difficult circumstances.
  • Actual relevance to the linkage of health with human rights.
  • Predominant activities in developing countries and with marginalized people.
  • Evidence of serious and long-term commitment.
  • Potential for award strengthening nominees work.
  • Potential for receipt of this award raising the profile of the Mann Award itself.
  • Funding will enhance visibility and public awareness of issue or project person/organization is addressing.
  • Potential for attracting additional resources towards resolution of the issue.

The award not only provides international recognition, but also carries substantial funding which can be used by the winner to work further in the area of health and human rights freely and creatively. The winner will be announced and honored in Washington, D.C. at a special Awards Ceremony during the Global Health Council’s 37th Annual International Conference, June 14-18, 2010. Nominations can be submitted online. The deadline to submit the nominations is 15 January 2010. For more information, visit this link.
