The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is now accepting nominations of sustainable environmental initiatives in emerging and developing countries for the 2011 UNEP Sasakawa Prize.
The UNEP Sasakawa Prize awards a cash prize of $200,000 and the 2011 prize will be given out at the ceremony and reception held in Nairobi, Kenya to be held in February 2011. Innovative, groundbreaking and sustainable grassroots environmental initiatives in emerging and developing countries can be nominated for the prize. Socio-environmental projects that promote the following themes can be nominated:
- Promote the conservation and sustainable management of forests
- Contribute to a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions caused by deforestation and forest degradation
- Maintain forest ecosystems to improve resilience to climate change
- Support pro-poor development, especially among forest-dependent communities
- Conserve biodiversity and help secure ecosystem services

Am representing a women led organisation based in Mazabuka, Zambia whose mission is to lobby and involve women and other vulnerable groups in enviromental management and awareness in the rural areas of mazabuka.Core on our activities is HIV prevention and gender mainstreaming.We are open to different partnerships and networking.The organisation is called Women Empowerment Alliance.
We are a community based organization by the name Agape for Vulnerable persons (abbreviations are as follows AGIVUNO NORTHRIFT-ELDORET,KENYA) It is a newly born organization registered with the ministry of Gender Social service in the District level. Our objectives are:
-To empower youth, promote sustainable development through active participation-environment conservation, agriculture, research, education, Health care
-Capacity building activities-human rights and project management trainings.
-To offer skills to the youths, orphans, children –catering, tailoring, typing, carpentry and computer training
-Microfinance-income generating activities – Poultry, dairy farming, knitting
-Hiv/Aids campaign to sensitization programs
The organization is aiming at the community at grassroots level and we are wondering if your organization can partner with our organization to make our vision successful. We are ready to remit our concept paper proposal for the same.
I was not able to register on line since among the countries listed therein; Kenya is not one of the countries.
