Inspirational Idea: Cooking Oil Processing Plant for Women and girls Economic Empowerment

    BACKGROUND AND SITUATION ANALYSIS

Golomoti Active AIDS Support Organization (GASO) is a community Based not for profit Non Governmental Organization working in the remote rural communities of Golomoti and Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza district, Malawi. These communities are located very remote 250km away from Lilongwe (capital city). The communities lay on the shores of Lake Malawi. GASO implements a number of programs that include Gender and Human Rights, Women Empowerment and HIV and AIDS.
    The above programs are the only hope for our women in the community. Through the programs we raise awareness on gender, human rights and HIV/AIDS. We empower women with skills in different areas of importance for example women are encouraged to be in groups for easy organization. In such groups we offer trainings in leadership, entrepreneurial and other relevant skills. We also provide counseling and support to abused women, girls and children but the challenge has been inadequate support due to funding. We want to bring hope and relief to the women through initiatives under this project. Women in their respective groups carry out welfare and agricultural activities amongst themselves. More interesting there is a group of women living with HIV .It has a membership of 128 women including a few girls. Profits realized from the project will be used to support and further the activities of these women groups. Below are a few issues that jeopardize the lives of women and girls in Malawi especially in our community;

There are many orphans and widows resulting from deaths of husbands who in most cases are breadwinners. This predisposes women to HIV and AIDS as they resort to promiscuity in order to sustain the household’s living standards. Prostitution is very high amongst these vulnerable women and girls due to poverty as they take it as the only and cheapest alternative to generating income.

There are cultural practices that negatively impact on women and girls such as ‘Chimwanamaye’ (wife swapping) whereby friends exchange wives so that they experience change. The wrong belief is that by practicing Chimwanamaye, Chances of having extra marital sex or affairs are reduced and they cannot engage in sex with somebody they don’t know. Unfortunately these people do not go for HIV testing before swapping their partners nor do they consult the women before they agree. There is also a cultural practice of Chokolo (Wife Inheritance) which does not seek women’s consent. In this way women’s rights are violated and hundreds of women contract HIV in the process. Girls are mostly affected by cultural initiation ceremonies.
It is estimated that over 35% of the population are living with HIV and most of these are women and young girls.

THE IMPACT OF THE PROJECT ON WOMEN, CHILDREN AND GIRLS

The project is expected to benefit 1000 women and girls including 128 women of the Golomoti Active AIDS Support Organization (GASO) support group of women living with HIV and AIDS. The project intends to create jobs for 14 women who will be directly involved in the management of the project. The income realized from this IGA will be used to support needs of the GASO support group of Women Living with HIV (WLHIV) which has 128 members and other women groups. Nutrition has been a challenge for WLHIV all along. People take ARVs without taking any food. This has resulted in PLHIV skipping some days without taking ARVs especially during the lean months of the year (November-March). This is the period when the harvest is almost exhausted in most poor households.
The project will provide nutritional needs for women living with HIV most of whom are caring for orphans. The project will provide resources through the direct provision of food, cooking oil itself, farm inputs for their maize fields and other social needs such as blankets, and mosquito nets to control Malaria which frequently occur among WLHIV and children. These women have children who on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART). Women will be asked to bring locally available food items like vegetables during their group therapy sessions. Other food supplements will be provided using the project’s resources. We shall engage the services of the nutritionist to help the women in nutritious food preparation using locally available foods. The food prepared during group therapies will be consumed right at that particular group meeting. We hope to reduce ART defaulters and AIDS related deaths among WLHIV with this project. We hope that more people living with HIV will be encouraged to come out in the open to declare their sero status and join this support group thereby reducing the spread of HIV. The project will provide training in farm manure making for the women so that they harvest enough without spending on fertilizer. It also recommended by health experts that it is unhealthy for people living with HIV to consume food substances which were grown using fertilizer. Awareness will not be limited to HIV/AIDS but
Girls in primary and secondary education especially those orphaned or from poor households will be supported with school supplies including uniform and fees. Currently GASO has in its register 27 Orphaned and Vulnerable Girls in secondary schools and of these only 3 are being supported by the organization due to luck of resources. It is hoped that the project will provide the solution to the problems faced by girls. The project will strengthen our program of helping girls to get excellent education and achieve gender equality/equity. We have for long wanted to introduce an award for girls in education whose performance has been good in class so as to create competition amongst our girls in the communities we work. We would like to use this project to achieve our goals to have more girls completing secondary education by introducing this award. Currently, only 15-18 percent of girls complete secondary education due to the existing poverty, gender disparities, early pregnancies, forced and early marriages and other cultural factors, beliefs and abuses.

    OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

 To economically empower women and girls by creating a special fund for Micro financing and Entrepreneurship training using profits realized.
 To create jobs for 14 women from different women support groups.(These will work as volunteers but after a year a little stipend will be introduced to motivate them)
 Improve the nutrition of women and girls living with HIV and ensure a 100% adherence for those on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) through the provision of livelihood programs such as farm inputs, trainings and direct food and nutritional support to their families.
 To empower girls by providing educational support for girls from poorest house holds and those affected by HIV and AIDS through the provision of school fees, uniform, note books and other school supplies.
 To provide support to abused women and girls. (long term)
 Conduct trainings on HIV/AIDS and Human and Women’s Rights to create broad awareness.

We believe that education is a vey important tool to fighting poverty among women and girls. Fighting poverty among women and girls by economically empowering them will launch the meaningful fight against poverty, gender based violence, unfriendly cultural practices and HIV and AIDS. We hope to restore the dignity women and consequently achieve MDGs 1, 3 and 4.

INTEGRATED SYSTEM OF CARE AND DEVELOPMENT FOR RURAL WOMEN
    (ISCDRW)

    I PROBLEM SATAEMENT

A hapless victim of the clash between the traditional system of pastoral domination and the pressing demand for income expected of the women, again of deprivation arising from lack of basic amenities of life and finally of closed system of social interaction Rural women remain bony withered off the life of enriching exposure and experience.

    II SSEED CAPABILITY STATEMENT

As required on the part of any non profit making organizations, SSEED bridges effectively the gulf between the change agents and the target group; the change agents include the funding agencies and the government agencies. SSEED has done exceptionally well the role of liaison particularly between government and the target group. This is exceptional in view of the fact that with minimum of administrative expenses, it is able to mobilize the asset worth of Rs.8,27,80,000/-which includes micro credit savings ,bank loans and finally infrastructure with the cost of Rs.20000000 covering 10000 families in the tree blocks or the projects. It has brought various services of the bank and has established infrastructure particularly check dam and thus facilitating effective agricultural operations. The outstanding feature of SSEED’s initiative is that it is able to do the asset formation and mobilization at the price which will be very low in the eyes of any service organizations.
