Early Grade Reading Innovation Challenge 2015
The READ Alliance has launched the Early Grade Reading Innovation Challenge 2015 (EGRIC 2015) which aims to discover, develop, and scale early grade reading innovations, with the goal of contributing to the improvement of the reading skills of Indian primary school age children.
Through EGRIC-2015, READ Alliance seeks a call to action for well-designed interventions targeting populations identified as high need and with a high potential for impact.
READ Alliance has identified some key contextual and systemic factors that contribute to low reading attainment and impede positive reading outcomes for students which are given below:
- Inadequate teacher training and insufficient teacher knowledge
- Unequal access to facilitative learning environments
- Unavailability of appropriate reading materials in schools
- Inadequate instruction time allotted to language teaching and reading practice in schools
- High primary school dropout rates
- High student to teacher ratio
- Inadequate attention to oral language development
On the basis of these key contributory factors, READ Alliance delineates the opportunity areas for reading intervention entry points into those that focus on ‘actors’ (students and teachers) and those that focus on ‘inputs’ (resources and materials).
Innovative interventions should address a combination of curricular and pedagogic change (including materials and assessment methods); teacher knowledge and support; and/ or support at the school/district level. Through EGRIC 2015, READ Alliance seeks to identify well-designed projects built on innovative programming & delivery including one or more of the following:
- Creative approaches to student and teacher training and support
- Pedagogical innovations targeting teaching methodology, curriculum content, and systems of classroom or individual learning.
- Interventions using technologies like ICTs, mobiles and internet
- An intervention that involves stakeholders like parents, administrators, government officials, private sector using a novel approach
- Novel operational processes or organizational models
READ Alliance invites organisations to submit letters of interest (LoI) proposing an early grade reading project that innovatively addresses one or more of the contributing causes and well-designed innovations as mentioned above. The last date for the submission of Letter of Interest (LoI) is 9th October by 11:59 pm.
