SIDA International Training Programme: Plant Breeding and Seed Production

Phase 1: September 5 – 30, 2011, Alnarp and Stockholm Sweden

Phase 2: March 12 – 23, 2012, To be decided

The main objective of this training programme is: to enhance the participants’ managerial efficiency by increasing their knowledge in all the essential elements of a modern seed industry. The programme will broaden the participants’ knowledge of modern plant breeding and seed industry, and improve their understanding of organisation management and modern technology in the complete chain from plant breeding via control to marketing.

The programme is divided in two phases and an intermediate phase between the two phases. The first phase will take place in Alnarp and Stockholm, Sweden, between September 5–30, 2011. The intermediate phase will consist of the participants’ work on their Projects of Change in their respective home countries. Phase 2 will be located in one of the participating countries between March 12–23, 2012. The programme is managed by Svalöf Consulting AB: Mrs Marie Hardfors Programme Administrator Mr Per Andersson Programme Director

Individuals working within agriculture and the seed industry can apply to participate in this programme. The participants may come from either the private-, public- or NGO sectors.

SIDA will cover the costs of training, participation fee and accommodation for participants. However, there will be no support for international travel from and to Sweden during the first phase. In the second phase, SIDA will cover the travel of participants for the training programme held in one fo the participating countries.

Organisation for upliftment of poor and needy women of villages in Tehri Garhwal through various activities like grow off season vegetables, Handloom & Handicrafts activities. our women beneficiaries already involev seed cultivation on tradetional methods & we purchase hybrid seed from market a& pay high cost.
    I have seen your training program and it is very useful for our women beneficiaries who increase their income level through adoption of new technology of seed cultivation.
    We discussed with our women beneficiaries about plant breeding & Seed production training program. All women agreed that will be definitely increase thier income level & they will be expand their seed production area.
    So this training progrram is more important for me and our beneficiaries & I am too much interested to participate in training but due to our organization and myself are not capable to afford my travel cost to and fro at Sweden.

    Hi,I work a research supervisor(plant breeding/biotechnology) at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture,Dar es salaam-Tanzania. I hold MSc in plant breeding/biotechnology.

    At IITA-Tanzania we are working hard to breed new varieties particularly new Cassava variety resistant to Cassava Brown Streak Disease and Cassava Mosaic Disease.Cassava is becoming the most important food crop in Saharan Africa as it naturally tolerate drought and low fertility.

    Training in plant breeding and seed production presents to me a worthwhile opportunity to learn new technology and get new insights in this area of plant breeding and seed production so as to intensify my way of of doing research/breeding and seed production.

    I am looking forward to participate in both phase one and phase two training courses and i hope my institute will be able to support me support for international travel from and to Sweden during the first phase.
