The Muste Institute supports several active grantmaking programs promoting nonviolent action for social justice in the United States and around the world.
The institute’s Social Justice Fund currently makes 10 to 15 grants annually of up to $2,000 for grassroots activist projects in the US and around the world, giving priority to those with small budgets and little access to more mainstream funding sources.
Focus Areas
The institute is especially interested in funding efforts to:
- stop war and militarism
- abolish the death penalty
- support labor organizing
- defend immigrant rights
- oppose prison injustice
- expose the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear power
International Nonviolence Training Fund
The International Nonviolence Training Fund(INTF) is a part of The Muste Institute’s grant programme.The INTF supports nonviolence training outside the United States, and within Native nations in the US.
The next deadlines for applications to the International Nonviolence Training Fund are the first Friday of the months March, September and December .
The maximum grant amount is US$ 4,000.
Eligibility Criteria
Projects eligible for support include:
- those which build capacity and leadership among people engaged in nonviolent struggles;
- those which prepare participants for specific nonviolent actions or campaigns;
- those geared to “training the trainers,” in order to expand and multiply nonviolence training throughout a targeted community.
Preference is given to:
- projects which involve trainers from the local area or region, where such trainers are available.
- groups which are small, community-based and have less access to funding from other sources.
