The Oak Foundation commits its resources to address issues of global social and environmental concern, particularly those that have a major impact on the lives of the disadvantaged. The funds support civil society organisations across the world that addresses issues of global, social and environmental concern.
The Oak Foundation helps in protecting the fundamental rights of the individual, supporting those who champion that struggle, and ensuring that perpetrators of gross abuses are held to account.
Initiatives above USD 25,000 will be supported by the foundation.
Eligible Countries
Balkans, Brazil, Central America, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Foundation also funds in Moldova, Bulgaria, the North Caucasus and (Jharkhand and West Bengal) India.

Issues Affecting Women Program
The Issues Affecting Women program is an initiative by Oak Foundation. The program ensures that women have the rights, capacity and opportunity to assure their safety from violence and to enjoy full and equal human rights.
In the Issues Affecting Women Program, foundation seeks to contribute to a world in which women have the rights, capacity and opportunity to experience safety from violence and to enjoy their full and equal human rights. Specifically, the program aims to build a strong and vibrant women’s movement comprising of women who are empowered individually and collectively to challenge patriarchal norms, tackle the root causes of inequality and demand the full spectrum of their rights.
The Issues Affecting Women Programme primarily supports women’s organisations, groups or funds that:
- adopt a rights-based approach;
- recognise women as rights holders and advance the rights of women and gender equality;
- have a participatory and empowering approach that places women centre stage, building on their strengths and ensuring their full and equal participation in society;
- take an integrated and holistic approach, considering women in the context of their environment and culture as well as understanding the nature and causes of the issues affecting them;
- promote systemic changes that hold duty bearers (i.e. governments and institutions) fully accountable for respecting, protecting and fulfilling women’s rights;
- contribute to the broader women’s movement by complementing individual and community action with networking and joint advocacy initiatives; and
- build evidence that contributes to best practices and catalyses innovation.
Eligibility Criteria
- The foundation supports non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working at the global, regional and national levels.
- The International Human Rights Programme is engaged directly in the EU, the US, Russia, India and Burma.
- Foundation also work through re-granters to support activists and organizations in critical areas where Oak is not currently able to fund directly (such as in the Middle East, North Africa and the Former Soviet Union).
- The foundation funds the initiatives above USD 25,000.
- Individuals and religious organizations will not be considered.
Application Process
- The Foundation accepts unsolicited requests through letters of enquiry which can be submitted at any time.
- The concept note includes the following information:
- A summary of the goals and budget of your organization.
- A description of the duration, goals and activities of the project for which you seek funding.
- Location of the project and description of the target population.
- Amount of the grant requested and total cost of the project.
- Actual or potential co-funders.
- After approval of a project concept through a letter of enquiry, programme staff will invite an organization to submit a full proposal.
