The European Union has signed an agreement with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to grant an amount of €106 million for boosting agricultural production across Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. This extremely large grant is part of the aid package budgeted €1 billion by the EU to respond towards the growing food crisis and reduce the impact of the current economic crisis that has brought down the costs of the food commodity prices, leading to more poverty especially among farmers with small-holdings. The Food Facility Programme of the EU was developed in partnership with the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Task Force on the Global Food Security Crisis and FAO has played a prominent role in identifying issues and developing projects to respond for increasing food security in developing countries. The donation from the EU will improve agricultural production in countries like the Central Afican Republic, Congo, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe and also countries from Asia and the Caribbean.
