Organizations, individuals and institutions are eligible to be nominated for the UNESCO’s International Literacy Prize. Nominees should have displayed “outstanding merit in literacy, achieving particularly effective results and promoting innovative approaches.” In this application process, nomination to UNESCO can be sent either through the government of the member country or through an international NGO that has formal relations with the UN agency. Each government or the international NGO can nominate up to two persons per year. The International Literacy Prize will be given away on 8 September 2009 on the International Literacy Day.
