Citi India in partnership with Friends of Women’s World Banking, technical support from MicroSave and grant support from Citi Foundation, USA is seeking nominations for 2011 Citi Micro Entrepreneur Awards.
Awards Description
The Citi Micro Entrepreneur Awards follow a unique model with the individual micro entrepreneur at its epicenter. While recognizing the contribution made by NGOs/MFIs that provide support and guidance as well as micro credit and credit linkages, the entire awards process is geared at identifying individuals and community owned enterprises who have defied poverty and challenging circumstances to emerge as outstanding micro entrepreneurs and exceptional community owned enterprise.
The awards are an endeavor to recognize and honor exemplary micro entrepreneurs who have overcome poverty and other challenges, to successfully build self-sustaining micro enterprises, creating employment and contributing meaningfully to their communities.
Conceptualized by Citi India, the program was launched in 2004 and is now in its eighth year in the country. Partnering with Citi for the program is Friends of Women’s World Banking and technical support is provided by MicroSave. The Awards program, implemented with grant support from Citi Foundation, USA, is an annual feature.
Objectives:
– To identify, recognize and honor micro-entrepreneurs who have exhibited superior performance that has helped them emerge out of poverty, create jobs and add value to society
– To invest in the skill and knowledge building of these exemplary micro entrepreneurs, so as to support the development of state-of-the-art micro enterprises, and the creation of role models who could inspire and mentor future generations of entrepreneurs
– To analyze and disseminate best practices derived during the awards process both nationally and internationally
– To recognize the power of community owned enterprises who have made significant impact, moved out of poverty and contributed towards employment generation and value to society.
Eligibility Criteria:
As an eligibility criterion, the awards focus on those entrepreneurs and community owed enterprises that started out from below the poverty line (BPL) and set up their enterprise/community owned enterprise by taking a micro loan from an institutional source. This ensures recognition for those micro entrepreneurs and COEs who emerged from the direst circumstances, and yet managed to make a positive contribution to society.
NGOs/MFIs who nominate the winners are also presented with special citations.
