Sepas Group is formed by a number of Iranian queers who wanted to appreciate those promoting queer human rights, culture, art and Science; congratulate and encourage them for their efforts. Sepas Group has issued a call to the international queer, human rights, and sexual rights communities to submit nominations for annual Sepas Award.
Purpose of Sepas Awards
The Sepas Award honours an organization or an individual whose work has made a significant contribution toward securing the full enjoyment of the human rights of queer communities that are subject to discrimination or abuse on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression, anywhere in the world. The award is announced every year on August 30th in commemoration of Saviz Shafaei’s birth day, the first Iranian gay activist who died in 2000 from cancer.
With the Sepas Award, the organizers seek to publicly recognize the courage and activism of grassroots groups and individuals working under the most challenging conditions in pursuit of human rights for queers irrespective of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Nominations in this context are sought for organizations and individuals from all regions of the world and from as wide a range of communities as possible, particularly from communities with limited access to movement-building resources and support like Iranians.
Award Criteria
In reviewing the candidates, the following criteria will be considered:
a) Demonstrated leadership and a record of outstanding achievements in the field of Queer Activism, Cultural, Art, Media, Writing and Science.
b) Practical work in the field and in difficult circumstances
c) Potential impact of the award in supporting and strengthening candidates’ work in the future
