The Futures Group is the contracting agency for implementing the Sexual HIV Prevention Program (SHIPP) in South Africa. The SHIPP is one of the most important projects of USAID that focuses on improving all the efforts for HIV prevention. The projects aims to build the national, provincial, and district leadership capacity of different associated departments. The organisations that actively take part in this project include the University of the Witwatersrand, Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU), the Centre for AIDS Development, Research, and Evaluation (CADRE), and U.S.-based EngenderHealth and Futures Institute.
The Futures Group invites proposals from individuals/ agencies for financial grants for implementation of the SHIPP project in South Africa. The Futures Group intends to provide an amount up to a maximum of US$250,000 annually for each grant awarded under this programme.
Project Objectives
– Strengthen the leadership capacity of South African government departments and other -structures that effectively coordinate, implement, and evaluate HIV prevention programming at national, provincial, and district levels
– Strengthen priority HIV prevention service delivery systems in the departments of health and education at all levels, including the community level
– Improve the quality, effectiveness, and coverage of HIV prevention programs at the community level
The SHIPP team will work with community leaders in the social sector and the National Department of Health, the Department of Education, and SANAC to identify and respond to key drivers of HIV transmission in order to reduce new HIV infections. The project aims to reduce HIV sexual transmission through building national and local leadership capacity to design and implement a combination package of HIV prevention activities. This combination prevention approach will address behavioural risk, social norms, biomedical interventions, and school-based programming and seeks to ensure the next HIV-free generation in South Africa.
Pre-Selection Eligibility Criteria
There are three sets of eligibility criteria, relating to:
– applicant(s) which may request a grant
– interventions/project for which a grant may be awarded
– types of cost which may be taken into account in setting the amount of the grant
Eligibility of Applicants
In order to be eligible for a grant, applicants must:
– be legal persons or an entity
– be non-profit making and
– be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the project/action, not acting as an intermediary
– have a DUNS number, an unique, non-indicative 9-digit identifier issued and maintained by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) that verifies the existence of a business entity globally.
