The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) is dedicated towards finding transport solutions that can result in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reduce poverty, and advance the quality of urban life.
ITDP is currently inviting nominations for 2012 Sustainable Transport Award that is offered every year to a city that demonstrated progress over the year to improve mobility for the residents and achieve reduction in air pollution emissions that happens due to vehicles running on the roads.
Criteria
Each year, the Sustainable Transport Award is given to a city or major jurisdiction that has a profound impact on lessening the impact of climate change and enhancing the sustainability and liveability of its community or region through innovative transportation strategies that increase mobility for all, while reducing transportation greenhouse and air pollution emissions, and improving safety and access for bicyclists and pedestrians.
The Award recognizes the city or major jurisdiction that has made most significant progress during the year in:
- improving public transportation,
- improving non-motorized travel and public space,
- implementing travel demand management programs to reduce private car use;
- reducing urban sprawl by linking transportation to development, and / or
- reducing transport related air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
This year the committee will also consider honourable mentions for cities that have demonstrated long-term commitment towards these goals through the implementation of multiple projects or large projects over time.
The Award is open to all cities and major jurisdictions. Nominees should be distinguished by their impact, innovation, and leadership in the transport sector. This may be demonstrated through activities including but not limited to:
- Creating safer streets, resulting in fewer road accidents and injuries;
- Improving the air quality by reducing traffic-related air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions;
- Increasing healthier choices for its citizens for getting around the city, such as walking and cycling; and
- Achieving greater passenger satisfaction on public transportation by offering better alternatives or as illustrated in increased ridership;
- Improving social equity as a direct impact and explicit goal of their transportation projects.
Nomination and Awards Process
Nominations will be accepted from the general public, as well as members of the selection committee.
In order to win the Award, a city or jurisdiction needs at least 6 votes from the award committee. If none receives 5 votes in the first round, the instant run-off votes will be tallied among the top candidates to ascertain the winner. If necessary, further polling will be done until one candidate accrues a majority of votes. To win an Honorable Mention, a candidate will need to receive at least 3 votes.
Awards are presented at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in January. Delegations from award winning cities are invited to join in person to receive their award.
Last date for submitting the nominations is 1 October 2011.
