A joint request for proposals launched by the Open Society Institute and the New World Foundation aims to provide grants for US-based NGOs so that they can increase their organizational sustainability. The “Call for Proposals: Developing Small Donor or Membership Bases” will provide grant support to community-based organizations or small alliances of organizations that have raised funding support for themselves either through small donors or through memberships.
This grant program recognizes the fact that NGOs face tremendous challenges while accessing funding and ensuring sustainability of their organizations. Excessive dependence on donors to sustain their organizational power can lead to instability in certain times due to external factors such as the recent financial crisis. Under such conditions, the need to find new ways to financially manage the organization arises. This grant program intends to identify and highlight those ideas which have helped NGOs raise funds from small donors or from a membership base leading to inspiration and information for others.
Grants for NGOs are available between $35,000 and $150,000 for a period of two years. The second year grant will be issued based on the achievements undertaken and certain indicators which will clearly show that organization is able sustain on its own beyond the second year of the grant period. The last date to apply for the grants is 30 October 2009. For more information, visit this link.
