The Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission is inviting nominations for the Human Rights Award 2011 to recognize the work of residents for advancing human rights. This award is presented every year by the Commission to a youth, individual or organization living or operating in Nova Scotia and whose actions/works match the theme of the award.
Eligibility
The categories of who is eligible are: youth, individual, and organizations. The criteria for each category are as follows:
Youth
Up to age 21
Individual
Over the age of 21
Organization
– An entity where two or more persons work together to achieve a goal
– The individuals form a group and work as a whole to achieve a common end purpose
– There is a structure in place to support the achievement of the common goal
– Provide an outline of the structure of the organization
Further Criteria
– The youth, individual, or organization must live or operate in Nova Scotia.
– The nominee’s work should fit the theme of the event of the year for which they are being nominated.
– The nominee espouses human rights values and does not discriminate based on race, gender, disability (Nova Scotia Human Rights Act).
Your nomination must demonstrate:
– That the nominee’s work includes a component of each of the following:
-> Education
-> Leadership
-> Impact
– That the nominee’s work promotes non-exclusionary practices, such as practices not in the contravention of the Human Rights Act
– How the nominee(s) has/have creatively advanced and protected human rights in communities
The Selection Process
– A human Rights Award Committee reviews the nominations
– Nominations that meet the selection criteria are sent to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commissioners
– The Commissioners selects the winner(s)
– The awards are presented at the International Human Rights Day event on December 10.
Last date for submitting the nominations is September 30, 2011.
