Call for abstracts on Place based foods: Theory, Methods, and Practices for Conservation at The Society of Ethnobiology’s 35th Annual Conference. This conference will initiate at the Denver Botanic Gardens, on 11 Apr 2012 and conclude on 14 Apr 2012.
Place-based foods are actually representative of unique landscapes, peoples, and practices. Their uniqueness derives not only from the place where these food items originate but also the significance of these foods for sustaining cultures and offering nutritionally appropriate diets.
The inherently interdisciplinary nature of ethnobiology research offers exclusive opportunities to contribute to the conservation of place-based foods and also our understanding of cultural diversity and biodiversity at a time when both entities are facing unprecedented risks. We invite scholars involved in research that emphasizes
on certain aspects of the ethnobiology of place-based foods to submit papers for a session(s) emphasizing on empirical and theoretical work. Abstracts and presentations should address the relevance of their research to conservation.
The theme of the conference is “Conservation and Communities” with presentations exploring the importance and power of linking conservation efforts to communities.
Presentations will focus on:
- Highlight engagement and collaboration with indigenous peoples
- Recognize the importance of working with children and elders
- Incorporate innovations in environmental education
- Document conservation (or lack thereof) in the paleoecological and archaeological records
- Integrate diverse kinds of knowledge
- Recognize the importance of traditional knowledge in conservation and restoration
- Investigate the application of archaeobiological data to conservation
- Provide different perspectives on land and natural resource management
The deadline for abstracts is January 15th, 2012.
