The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) an autonomous body within the United Nations system, announce to organize the briefing workshop “Rio Preparation Forum Briefing: Connectedness and Sustainability” in cooperation with Digital Energy Sustainable Solutions Campagin (DESSC.
In this workshop, UNITAR and DESSC will therefore explore how ICT and social media facilitate and accelerate transition to a global sustainable culture that enables and promotes sustainable development
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), especially used as a social media tool, play a crucial role in linking individuals on a global scale to establish and strengthen the kinds of social relationships necessary to create and share knowledge on sustainability, build the foundation of a Green Economy, and foster accountability and effectiveness of a legitimate institutional framework for sustainable development
- Understand the key concepts and technologies of social media;
- Identify the contribution of social media and ICTs to sustainable development and poverty eradication;
- Think critically about the various challenges for social media and ICTs to have positive impact on sustainable development;
- Identify key opportunities for business, civil society, and Member States to cooperate to maximize the positive contribution of social media and ICTs on sustainable development.
The briefing is open to members of permanent missions to the United Nations in New York, especially those who are in charge of the sustainable development portfolio. Representatives of governments, international organizations, the United Nations system, civil society and private sector with academic or professional interest on the topic are also encouraged to participate.
