This summer the Dutch-Flemish Institute in Cairo provides a comprehensive course on democratization and political transitions in the Middle East which will be organized from Sunday 15 July to Friday 27 July, 2012. This institute offers thorough analysis of contemporary political events in the Arab World. The events in the Arab world will be placed in historical as well as comparative perspective with an emphasis on Egypt as the largest Arab state.
Main coordinators/lecturers include:
- Dr. Andre Krouwel (Free University Amsterdam)
Andre Krouwel, expert on political transitions in Latin America and Eastern Europe at the Free University Amsterdam and founder of Vote Compass, will introduce the students to a wide range of theoretical perspectives in democratization and political transitology
- Alexander Hammelburg (University of Amsterdam)
Middle East expert and political scientist at the Universiteit of Amsterdam, Alexander Hammelburg, will analyse recent developments in the Middle East and specifically Egypt and discuss how they fit into the wider theoretical debate on political transitions
- Dr. Mazen Hassan (Cairo University)
Scholars from Cairo University, most notably Prof. Mazen Hassan, an expert on Egyptian politics, will give several guest lectures. Prof. Hassan has been intensively analyzing the parliamentary and presidential elections, and is an expert on the formation and transition of political systems.
All scholars lecturing in this Summer School have lived and worked in the Middle East and North Africa, which allows them to place events in the political, economic and cultural context of the region. Moreover, students will be familiarized with Egyptian society and politics by different excursions to experts and important figures in Egyptian society.
