Ministry of Education, Specialist staff, Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) and specialist teachers can apply for the Autism Spectrum Disorder Study Award. The award supports specialists to study the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist teaching: Autism Spectrum Disorder delivered by Massey University. The diploma is delivered part-time over two years.
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Study Award supports specialists to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Autism Spectrum Disorder offered by Massey University. Awards will be allocated to Ministry of Education specialist staff as Speech Language Therapist, Psychologist, Special Education Advisor, Occupational Therapist, Early Intervention Teacher, RTLB and specialist teachers wishing to gain a specialist qualification in supporting teachers and teams who work with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Teachers working in special education support other teachers, as through an outreach service, who directly or indirectly works with large numbers of students with ASD, may also apply. Teachers who don’t fit the above criteria may apply for support to undertake the Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Autism Spectrum Disorder through the Special Teaching Needs Award (STN award), provided they fit with the STN award eligibility criteria.
Recipients are entitled to a travel and accommodation contribution. Domestic tuition fees and paid study leave are funded for the two years of study.
Course duration and structure:
There is one course of study supported by the study award. The Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Autism Spectrum Disorder offered by Massey University.
This diploma is delivered part-time over two years by distance study combined with some block course sessions at the university campus. There are two one-week block courses each year (one in February/March and one in August/September). The diploma is made up of four papers.
Eligibility criteria:
To be eligible to apply for this study award you must meet all these criteria:
· Be employed either:
· By ministry of education special education as, for example, a speech language therapist, psychologist, special education advisor, occupational therapist or early intervention teacher, or
·: justify;”>· As a registered teacher working in special education
· Hold a relevant professional qualification such as a bachelor of education, bachelor of speech language therapy or an equivalent qualification*
· Have approval and support from your employer
·: justify;”>· Have an interest in and experience of working with children with ASD
Applicants in part-time positions will be eligible for a study award. Paid study leave funding will be proportionate to the extent of their part-time employment.
Study award provisions:
Autism Spectrum Disorder Study Award recipients will receive:
· A contribution towards travel and accommodation
· Domestic tuition fees paid in full to the course provider
· Paid study leave paid to the employer
