The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa is Engaged in research and policy advocacy on the issue of large-scale land acquisitions in Africa and in Southern Africa.
PLAAS is working on various projects with partnerships like Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC), Land Deal Politics Initiative (LDPI) and doing research and engaging in policy advocacy in Africa and in Southern Africa, PLASS is also part of the Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC) in Malawi, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria, PLASS have conducted own research in Congo and Mozambique, and are initiating further research on institutional arrangements in land deals in Africa, focusing on Ghana, Kenya and Zambia. PLASS form part of the Land Deal Politics Initiative (LDPI), a global research network which has initiated two small grants programmes, providing small research grants and opportunities for publication to over 50 PhD students globally, and which hosted a major conference on Global Land Grabbing in April 2011 (at the University of Sussex, UK) and will host a follow-up conference, Global Land Grabbing II in October 2012 (Cornell University, USA).
PLAAS plans to conduct further research over the next three years on large-scale land acquisitions or ‘land grabbing’ in Southern Africa, and is seeking research partners. with aim to complement major existing studies in collaboration with appropriate partners in local research institutions and non-governmental organisations working with local land /users in Southern Africa. purpose is not therefore to do more research that addresses who is getting what land where, but to focus on the processes through which land is being transacted, and the outcomes for local people in terms of social differentiation, especially gender, class and generational inequality.
PLASS Invites Expresions of Intrest and seeking Research Partnerships on “Large-Scale Land Acquisitions or ‘Land Grabbing’ – Implications for Land Rights and Livelihoods in Southern Africa
Funds are available to support field-based research, meetings with research partners, publication of research reports, working papers, policy briefs and a book, and travel to enable dissemination to key policy audiences. The exact package and terms are to be negotiated.
