United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime -UNODC in partnership with the Government of Maldives is supporting a European Union (EU) funded project “Strengthening the national response to combat drug abuse in the Maldives” (MDV K30). Under the civil society support component, UNODC has carried out drug prevention activities through NGO grant process from December 2010 to February 2012.
The Objective relating to the current NGO Grant is:
• Support civil society to deliver effective drug prevention and awareness programmes. The partner agency will undertake relevant activities that relate to the objectives of current NGO grant with the purpose to deliver effective prevention and awareness programmes to the general public. NGO activities can fall within the following broad categories;
• Generate awareness on drug use, its impacts, on prevention and treatment available, among the general population in the coverage area
•Conduct school based drug education and drug prevention programmes for students in the geographical area of coverage
• Conduct parental education and drug prevention programmes in the geographical area of coverage
•Conduct awareness programmes and camps for youth (with special focus on out-of-school youth) in the geographical area of coverage focusing on issues related drug use, its impacts, on prevention and treatment available
After an evaluation of these fourteen months the project is onto a further second phase, to strengthen the capacity of civil society partners and subsequently support them to initiate/strengthen comprehensive community based approaches towards drug use prevention, treatment and care services for the drug users and their family members.
