National Foundation for India was set up in 1992 by eminent Indians as an Indian grant making and fund-raising Foundation to catalyze a vibrant and well capable voluntary sector. It is seeking resources to address the long felt need of deepening development and real empowerment in the country to improve the social and economic conditions of thousands of people living in margins of development. NFI works or has worked with about 200 small to medium level voluntary organization partners in strengthening the ground created through small pilot initiatives in select locations if India, in the fields of elementary education, local governance, livelihoods security and peace and justice by deepening constructive work through a sustained process of building community leadership and people’s agency.
The projects are taken up in poverty endemic locations and include schools for deprived and marginalized communities, facilitating participatory governance process through holistic community driven approach to improving sanitation, drinking water and social development opportunities, strengthening livelihoods and social empowerment, building peace efforts of the community by itself and recognizing and strengthening leadership of ordinary men and women.
The projects have an integrated approach of social mobilization and social cohesion building, capacity building, facilitating convergence and building bridges for improving the coverage, effectiveness and depth of the ongoing initiatives. NFI provides ongoing hand-holding, monitoring and evaluation and combines development action with communication in all projects for bridging development discourses with experiences from the ground. NFI also tries to develop capacities of its partners to address the needs of the community in a holistic way and promotes cross learning opportunities among its partners and with others in the field of development through networking, knowledge building and exposure.
