Deadline- 8th March 2013
University of Aberdeen offers funding grants for international students to pursue ethics, religion, law, human rights, politics and sociology and deals with some of the enduring legal, ethical and socio-political issues affecting societies emerging from war and conflict.
Transitional justice is a catch-all phrase to summarise the range of intellectual concerns important to post-conflict societies, which includes topics like victimhood, memory, memorialisation and remembrance, war trials, amnesty, political and institutional reconstruction, human rights law, ethical and moral considerations around forgiveness, justice and healing, as well as cultural and symbolic change, gender empowerment in peace processes and the deconstruction of violent masculinities, the political underpinning of peace, the development of compromise after conflict, religious interventions in peacebuilding and reconciliation and so on. There is internationally recognised expertise in the College in the area of this programme and already a critical mass of PhD students working in these topics, so applicants will be working in a vibrant and energetic intellectual community that reflects existing work and adds to its high quality by providing new resource and opportunities for further growth and collaboration.
