More Details: Sympathy International, formally Millennium Ladies Club, was formed in the Year 2000 by a young dynamic woman called Miss Sally Esinam Torpey, a then student of the University Practice Secondary School in Cape Coast. Its main agenda was to create a platform for girls her age to be educated on their reproductive health management needs, and to be cautioned against conducting themselves in immoral behaviors, so as to help them focus on their academic work, in order to become responsible adults in future.
Through her efforts, Miss Sally mobilized health workers and career counselors to address the whole student population on carefully selected topics which affect the lives of the young students. After completing her secondary school education, Miss Sally Torpey found it promising to keep her laudable dream alive and this led to the formation of Sympathy International.
This local NGO was formed as part of general response to address the formidable challenges facing people especially women who live in the rural areas in the Central Region Ghana. These difficulties include disease, poverty, deprivation and social injustice including inadequate access to productive resources including land, improved and appropriate technology, credit, and general lack of knowledge about reproductive health management skills. The avowed vision of Sympathy International is to create a permanent conducive environment which will create a dignified way of life for the people by overcoming disease, deprivation and poverty.
