24 young environmental journalists are invited to participate in Flag it training project offered by European Youth Press. The project purpose is to equip young reporters from all over the world with innovative reporting tools in order to raise awareness of global environmental challenges. For this project knowledge of English will be basic criteria.
Tools such as Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Fusion Tables, Crowdmap, Ushahidi, Geocommons, and others will be used in training sessions. The training will be held in two sessions-
- in São Paulo (Brazil): from the 20th to the 26th of May 2013 (12 participants involved)
- in Lagos (Nigeria): from the 1st to the 7th of July 2013 (12 participants involved)
Training covers travel costs, accommodation and board are covered for the event. Detailed information on these costs and limits will be provided to selected participants by the organizers.
The participants will be involved in specific sessions on-
- Data mining: how to explore large datasets to create stories and visualization
- Data journalism: the whole process of using data to create stories
- Data Visualization: using digital tools to analyze data
- Mapping : using tools to create interactive maps
- Crowdsourcing: how to use different sources like SMS, mobile apps, citizens reports, social networks to create one’s own story
- Geojournalism: using geotagged content to create and illustrate one’s own story
Documents required-
- To provide their personal data, address of domicile and passport ID
- To upload their CV and motivation letter, in English, stating: their interest to participate to the training course and their previous experience in environmental reporting
- To provide a list of links with media samples
- A letter of support from a relevant media (this may include school newspapers and/or proof of active participation in blogs, social networks, etc.) will be considered an asset
Eligibility & Criteria-
- The call is open to young journalists, aged 18 to 35 who are citizens or legal residents of the following countries: Brazil, Philippines, Nigeria, Romania, Latvia and any countries in which EYP member organizations are based.
- Working level of English;
- Computer literate, with a basic knowledge of social networking;
- Proven knowledge or interest in environmental reporting;
- Capacity to be multipliers (any involvement in local networks or organizations is viewed as an advantage).
- Participants need to be based in the countries mentioned above.
