The National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation (NWCAVE) is pleased to offer Jane Velez-Mitchell Journalism Award (JVM) offered to Journalists having a Voice for Women & Girls. The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in coverage of news of local, national, and international significance, with a single award for either a print or broadcast journalist who uses the power of media and his/her position to highlight the ongoing violence against women and girls, whether domestic violence, human trafficking, kidnapping and abductions, hate crimes, or other despicable crimes and violence against women and girls without re-victimizing and re-exploiting the victim(s).
Eligibility & Criteria-
- Applicants or the nominated journalist(s) is credentialed as a journalist, reporter, writer, anchor, D.J., credible social media reporter/writer in the genre of print publications, broadcast, cable, radio, and/or Internet areas of journalism.
- The nominated journalist(s) agrees to be nominated and is available to attend the Southwest Conference Against Trafficking January 17-19, 2014 in Pomona, CA (travel will be covered) where the winner will be awarded the JVM Journalism Award.
- Nominee(s) resides and works in the United States of America.
- The nomination may be submitted for an individual and/or team. Entries and winners may be of any gender and ethnicity. The submission though, must be for work on bringing more awareness to the issues of violence against women and girls
- The main criteria for the nominees to be considered is the impact they have had on keeping violence against women and girls as a focus point of delivery to their audiences. Only projects and submissions showing the efforts a journalist/company who continues using their voice(s) to bring more awareness to the ongoing violence against women will be considered. This may include but not limited to: domestic violence, kidnappings and abductions, human labor and sex trafficking, bullying, family molestation, workplace violence and discrimination, rape, murder, and hate/discrimination crimes.
