Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is inviting proposals from researchers around the globe for Unlocking the Potential of Groundwater for the Poor (UPGro) Research Program in low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Aim of UPGro is to fund large-scale (up to £1.9M FEC), interdisciplinary social and natural science research projects to develop new knowledge and build capacity to enable developing countries in SSA to benefit from the use of groundwater in a sustainable way. This will also provide the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary teams bringing together developed and developing country scientists.
Total available budget of the call is up to £7.6M funded for a maximum duration of four years.

- Governance, Institutions and Access
- Impacts of Future Trends, and include a strong focus on both physical science and social aspects
Eligibility Criteria –
- A national or regional research institution or an NGO with the capacity to undertake high-quality research that is operating in a low-income or a middle-income country are eligible to apply.
- An individual holding the nationality of a developing country (low income or middle income countries) is eligible to take the role of researcher in the UPGro project.
- The applications must be interdisciplinary in nature and include both social and natural science.
- Research must be primarily focused in low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Projects focusing in middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are also supported if they show clear impact of the research on the poor and applicability to low-income countries.
