European Association for Jewish Studies (EAJS) is inviting abstracts from advanced graduate students and junior scholars who are working on projects that are connected with Jewish history in the Bohemian Lands and Poland to present in ‘Polish-Jewish Studies: Differences and Similarities’ conference to be held at Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague from 29-30 October 2014. The conference aims to bring together scholars who specialize in the history of the Jews of Poland or the Bohemian Lands, in order to discuss shared topics, the current state of research, and the differences and similarities in their approaches and results.
There will be total five panels and each panel will include four papers. Among four, two of them will be offered by renowned specialists on Polish-Jewish and Czech-Jewish history, providing an overview and analyzing the major research trends and results, pointing out their strengths and limits. The other two will introduce recent research projects on the topic, ideally one about the Polish milieu, the other about the Czech. At least one of the presenters will be a young, up-coming scholar.
Topics for Panel Discussions are –
- The Jewish experience in early modern societies
- Jewish demography and migration
- Questions of gender and family
- New approaches to concepts of modernization and identity
- Jewish experience in post-war societies
Abstract should be 300-500 words paper 20 minutes in length (for presentation). The graduate students and junior scholars must indicate the need of assistance in the application while submitting paper to be considered for support regarding accommodation, food and travel expenses.
European Association for Jewish Studies is the umbrella organization representing this field of university studies in Europe. It aims to encourage and support the research and teaching of Jewish studies at university level in Europe, and other places of higher education and learning.
