The United States Department of States Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) invites proposals from the United States non-profit organizations with experience working in Afghanistan and Bangladesh to apply for the grant program entitled ‘Supporting Civil Society in Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The projects that promote democracy and human rights in these two countries are accepted under the call.
Programs for Afghanistan:
Promoting grassroots reconciliation and local-level conflict resolution – that will promote respect for human and women’s rights while fostering a participatory and bottom-up reconciliation process; engage traditional (religious and tribal elders) and modern civil society actors to support and participate in grassroots reconciliation; strengthen the capacity of local NGOs; and increase public awareness and understanding of reconciliation processes. Program Fund is approximately $1,150,000.
Programs for Bangladesh:
Strengthening Civil Society – programs that focus on strengthening civil society organizations’ monitoring, accountability, and oversight initiatives through inclusivity and non-violence. Program Fund is approximately $300,000
Empowering Youth Leaders – projects that strengthen youth leaders’ knowledge of basic principles of transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and non-violent civic participation; and incorporate a small grants mechanism that change leaders can leverage to work with relevant stake holders to address pressing community issues. Program Fund is approximately $300,000
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be a U.S. non-profit organization meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c) (3) or a comparable organization headquartered internationally, or an international organization.
- Applicants must have demonstrated experience administering successful and preferably similar projects in Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Those without experience can also apply.
- Applicants must have existing, or the capacity to develop, active partnerships with in-country entities and relevant stakeholders including non-governmental organizations.
- Organizations can form consortia to submit a combined proposal. In this case, one organization must be designated as the lead applicant.
An organization may submit up to three (3) proposals; organizations must submit separate proposals for each program area.
