The International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in Germany is selected projects to providing financial support for years 2010 and 2011. The initiative “supports climate protection projects in developing, newly industrialising and transition countries (“partner countries”) and complements the Federal Government’s existing international, multi- and bilateral cooperation.” The financial support will rendered to projects working for “climate protection especially reducing greenhouse gases, improving adaptability to the consequences of climate change and conserving and sustainably using climate-relevant areas which merit projects.”
There are focal areas under which the funding will be given: (1) climate friendly economy (2) adaptation to climate change (3) preservation and sustainable use of natural carbon sinks / REDD. Technology transfer, policy advice, research cooperation, capacity development and training and elaboration of studies and strategies will be some of the activities to be covered under the project.
NGOs, international/multilateral agencies, government organizations, research institutes, universities and private institutes from all around the world are invited to submit proposals. They should have previous experience and expertise in the field. The selection criteria for selecting projects for funding are:
• relevance for one or several of the focal areas of the International Climate Initiative
• innovative character (technologically, economically, methodologically, institutionally)
• sustainability of project effects
• possibility of duplicating results, visibility and multiplier effect
• transferability of projects to the level of international climate cooperation in the context of the UN climate negotiations
• integration in national strategies, in international cooperation and synergies with other projects and sectors
For applicants intending to implement projects in (second half of) 2010 have to submit their applications before 15 April 2010. For projects to be started during the first half of 2011, the proposals should reach IKI before 31 December 2010. For more information, visit this link.
