The Secretariat of the Pacific community (SPC) is currently accepting applications from the applicants for the post of Gender Equality Adviser. The position will be based in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.
The Gender Equality Adviser will support the work of the Gender, Culture and Youth Programme, and projects implemented in accordance with SPC’s corporate plan. The Gender Equality Adviser will also work closely with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of the Australian Government, through its embassy in Pohnpei, to support the implementation and monitoring of the Pacific Women programme in the north Pacific.
SPC works in a wide range of sectors with the aim of achieving three development outcomes – sustainable economic development, sustainable natural resource management and development, and sustainable human and social development.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Gender Equality Adviser will perform the following functions-
- Assist SPC member countries and territories in the development, implementation, review and monitoring of gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights policy and sectoral gender-responsive policies and strategies. Provide technical support to relevant national committees, including research, analysis, planning, networking and development of strategic advocacy plans.
- Assist with building national capacity for the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
- Take responsibility for strengthening networks and partnerships to support the gender equality and human rights work of SPC and DFAT.
- Ensure the smooth implementation of gender equality-related projects and initiatives with SPC member countries in the northern Pacific, including regional, sub-regional, and collaborative initiatives in these areas.
- Support the Australian Embassy in Pohnpei to monitor the progress of activities identified in the Pacific Women country plans. Liaise with organisations that are implementing activities in relation to the progress of these activities and about any issues that they are encountering that may affect the performance and outcomes of these activities.
- Assist with the design, development and implementation of workshops and meetings, such as the Triennial Conferences of Pacific Women and Ministers for Women meetings.
- Assist in the production and dissemination of quarterly and six-monthly financial and narrative reports, in line with the GCY programme, monitoring and learning frameworks.
- Coordinate and liaise with development partners implementing gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s human rights-related initiatives in the north Pacific.
- Support the gender mainstreaming process of SPC and DFAT programmes in the north Pacific.
- Provide technical support and work closely with staff of SPC’s Regional Rights Resource Team in the north Pacific and SPC’s programs implemented in the north Pacific.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- A postgraduate degree in anthropology, international development, social/political sciences, or another relevant discipline. A specialisation in gender equality is essential.
- A minimum of eight years’ experience at an advisory level with a specialisation in gender equality and women’s human rights.
- A track record in the design and implementation of policies and programmes in gender equality.
- A sound knowledge of international principles and frameworks related to gender equality (such as CEDAW), including knowledge of the post-2015 development agenda.
- Ability to influence and guide others to achieve programme, divisional and organisational goals.
- Strong negotiation, communication and advocacy skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in English, with a working knowledge of French being an advantage.
