The Department of Political Affairs (UNDPA) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Political Affairs Officer based in New York, USA.
UNDPA monitors and assesses global political developments with an eye to detecting potential crises before they erupt and devising effective responses.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Political Affairs Officer will perform the following functions-
- Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they relate to the countries and thematic mandates on the agenda of the Security Council.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
- Monitors national and regional level political developments that could become a threat to international peace and security. Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the Security Council.
- Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and member states and/or Panels of Experts on coordination and policy matters.
- Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
- Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to the Security Council, its subsidiary organs and Panels of Experts.
- Participates in missions of the Security Council and its subsidiary organs to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
- Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Security Council, its subsidiary bodies, conferences, meetings, and/or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization’s purview.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, conflict resolution or related area is required.
- Experience in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council and/or its subsidiary organs is desirable.
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
