The U.S. Department of State is pleased to announce a small grants initiative to support the spread of democratic principles. Non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations are eligible to apply for this grant.
The U.S. Embassy is now accepting proposals for up to a maximum of $20,000 for programs which promote democratic practices and principles.
Grants may be used for:
- Expenses directly related to the program implementation
- Modest administrative expenses
- Training trainers
- Seminars/workshops
- Publications
Grants may not be used for, or given to:
- Individuals or partisan groups
- For the purpose of funding international travel,
- For food/drink expenses,
- For provision of social services
- General operating costs or long-term overhead expenses
Priority will be given to organizations that have not previously received U.S. government funds. Project initiatives may include, but are not limited to, the following themes:
- Civil Society: Contributing to the development of civil society as it pertains to societal participation in social movements, etc.
- Media: Fostering freedom of information and independent media
- Transparency: Increasing transparency in government
- NGO Sector: Supporting democratic NGO initiatives and capacity building
- Law: Advancing rule of law and judicial reform
- Education: Promoting civic education among society in order to further democracy and democratic participation
- Conflict: Encouraging peaceful conflict resolution
- Human Rights: Furthering the prioritization of human rights and advocacy for equal treatment of women and minorities
The firm deadline for submission of proposals is 12 Noon June 9th, 2010.
