World Health Organization (WHO) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Senior Writer in Brazzaville, Congo. The duration for the post is of 2 years.
The mission of WHO is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations’ system.
Key Jobs Responsibilities
The Senior Writer performs the following functions-
- Drafts speeches and other written materials:
- Drafts, edits and finalizes effective and accurate speeches, talking points, FAQs and other materials (including op-eds, articles, and contributions to the RD’s Report and other publications) for public dissemination.
- Reviews related materials with relevant staff in the Regional Office and other offices as appropriate and checks all supporting data with the most reliable internal sources.
- Writes with imagination, creativity, and sensitivity, bearing in mind the strategic direction of the African Regional Office, and researches audiences to best target specific information and help audiences gain understanding of AFRO’s programmes and activities.
- Conducts the necessary research to address specific and complex subjects:
- Assumes responsibility for researching material that is often technical, scientific or historical.
- Knows where to go for information, develops contacts, and maintains ongoing relationships with diverse sources of information.
- Supports the work of the Communications Team and other Clusters:
- Liaises with the Communications Team, other AFRO Clusters, Units and Programmes for communications matters including drafting of press releases and other statements.
- Contributes to the strategic thinking and positioning of WHO/AFRO through the future planning process.
- Proactively keep abreast of success stories, upcoming events and other potentially significant developments in AFRO.
- Extract key messages from speeches/presentations/articles for dissemination through social media channels, in close collaboration with the Communications Team.
- Keep up to date on latest public health developments.
- Attends meetings of the Communications Unit to remain current on upcoming events or items of interest to AFRO and the Executive Director.
- Performs any other duties as may be assigned by the Regional Director.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must have-
- Advanced University degree in Communication, Journalism, International Relations, the Social Sciences, or the Humanities required.
- Training in public health related issues.
- At least 10 years of relevant work experience preferably in communications, international relations and in an international context with at least two years in the field.
- Extensive writing and communications experience.
- Field experience in public health programmes in developing countries will be an advantage Knowledge of WHO policies and procedures.
- Excellent writing skills in English in a variety of styles and under tight deadline pressure.
- Ability to develop messaging and positioning for an international organization.
- Demonstrated networking.
- Excellent knowledge of English with a good working knowledge of French.
- Knowledge of Portuguese is an advantage.
