International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) and Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (MAIB) are currently seeking applications for the Advanced Specialised Course in “Sustainable Agriculture” 2011-2012. The course has been prepared to promote sustainable agriculture and rural development in order to eradicate or lessen the poverty. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers the financial support for the implementation of this program.
The course programme is available in the “Education and Training” section. Scholarships are awarded to students coming from the following countries: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya (Bengasi) Mauritania, Morocco, Palestine, Serbia, Tunisia, Yemen.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will strengthen their capacities in order to:
– Understand policies and institutions for SA, with emphasis on research and extension services;
– Promote community participation in natural resource management, agricultural technology development and dissemination;
– Facilitate networking mechanisms for smallholders market access;
– Use tools for rapid and participatory rural appraisal.
Course Programme
Preparatory phase at MAIB (November ‘11 – January ’12)
During this phase the lecturers will engage in the transfer of basic concepts, information and skills that are necessary to underpin the research process in which participants will be involved in their home countries (2nd phase). This phase includes three main didactic modules.
-> Sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods
-> Sustainable natural resource and farm systems management
-> Participatory approaches to socio-economic research in rural areas
Action learning phase in home countries (February ‘12 – mid May ’12)
In this phase participants will consolidate and contextualize their knowledge on sustainable agriculture and will learn how to use a range of participatory tools and techniques for socio-economic research.
Follow-up phase at MAIB (Mid May ‘12 – June ’12)
During this phase workshop activities will be organized where participants will present and discuss, through the facilitation of experts, the results achieved during the research process in the home countries.

No direct applications to CIHEAM-IAMB will be considered or accepted.
