The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award Program accepts nominations for the Regional and Continental level Scientific Awards. The yearly award ceremony is organized at three levels- National, Regional, and Continental. Deadline for National level nominations is already closed.
The award program is designed to honor the African scientists who have remarkable achievements, demonstrated by number of publications, number of research graduate students, applicability of the scientific work to Africa’s challenges, and its patentability.
Awards
- AU-TWAS National Young Scientists Award worth US$5000 to young scientists/researchers- National Level (2 per country)
- African Union Regional Women Scientists Award worth US$20,00 for women scientists- Regional Level (2 per region). The two winners per region will be selected from two different African Union Member States within the region. Deadline is 30 October 2014
- Continental Scientific Award worth US$100,000 for all pioneer scientists – Continental Level (2 awards). The two winners will be selected from two different African Union member States. Deadline is 15November 2014.
One award per each of the following two scientific sectors will be given out at each level.
- Life & Earth Sciences
- Basic Science, Technology and Innovation
Eligibility Criteria
- Only nationals of the African Union (AU) Member States are eligible to participate in these Awards.
- For the African Union Regional Scientific Award for Women, applicants should have intensively
- published at least ten (10) SCI publications.
- For the Continental applicants should have at least twenty (20) SCI publications.
- Individuals who have received an African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award in the past
- five years under this program cannot apply for the award.
- Applicants from Member State that is under AU sanctions are not considered.
- Employees of any AU organ or employees of the Regional Economic Communities are not eligible to apply for the awards.
- For the national level award, the nominee can be young scientist, both women and men, not more than 40 years of age by 31 December 2014.
- There is no age limit for Continental Award
Note: For Continental Scientific Award, the applications along with all supporting documents must be posted (physical) with the following information on the envelop- full name, contact and email addresses of the applicant and note stating “African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award/Not to be opened before the opening session”.
