The African Water Facility (AWF) awards grants of between €50,000 and €5,000,000 to water projects that need financial and technical help for implementation, or to meet the strict criteria expected by development partners and the global investment community.
AWF focuses its efforts at achieving its major objective of resource mobilization and applying these for activities in the African water sector with the view to improving the enabling environment to attract more investments and direct capital investments. It is well known for its fast-approval and flexible procedures for grant making.
Focus Areas
- The AWF’s strategic focus is in supporting Project Preparation, Water Governance and Water Knowledge projects designed to catalyze the development of the African water sector.
- Along with its grants, the AWF also provides technical expertise and know-how to support project grantees all the way to project completion.
Type of Funding
- Projects are eligible between the floor of EUR 50,000 and the ceiling of EUR 5,000,000.
- The projects have to be designed, implemented and monitored within the framework of managing for results.
- The Facility requires that statements of expenditure and supporting documents of project expenditures be reviewed and certified by an independent auditor at predetermined intervals.
- The funds provided to eligible recipients shall be treated as non-reimbursable grants.
Application Deadline
- The AWF team of experts assesses the received funding requests throughout the year and transmits its evaluation and decision in due course.
- An acknowledgement message is sent to confirm the registration of the request by the AWF team.
Eligibility for water project funding
African Water Facility (AWF) grants are awarded to recipients and projects that fit the criteria given below:
Recipient eligibility
To be eligible to receive AWF grants or technical assistance, recipients must be regional member countries of the African Development Bank (ADB), political subdivisions or agencies working within these countries, or regional agencies or institutions concerned with water resource development in Africa.
Government and regional institutions
- Central or local African governments and municipalities
- Regional, sub-regional and sectoral organisations such as Regional Economic Organisations (REOs), River Basin Organisations (RBOs), etc.
NGO and civil societies
- Be a non-governmental organization committed to the continent’s or national development priorities, with proposed activities that will be implemented in Africa
- Be Africa-based or provide evidence of partnership with African institutions
- Provide evidence of currently valid legal registration under the laws of the RMC in which it is operating; as well as evidence of a certificate to carry out business in the RMC in which it intends to carry out the relevant activity, if different from the place of legal registration
Project eligibility
To be eligible for financing under the AWF, proposed activities and projects must typically meet one of our strategic pillars: Project Preparation, Water Governance and Water Knowledge.
Outcomes consistent with priority issues such as Climate Change, Social and Gender Equity and Environmental Protection may also be given priority.
Application procedure
- All applicants are requested to read the instructions in the AWF Funding Project proposal carefully and submit sufficient documentation of their submitted projects.
- The completed forms should be sent to the general AWF email address.
