DEADLINE- August 12, 2011
Countries/Region– Asia, Africa
IEF-supported projects protect elephants from poaching, seek solutions for human-elephant conflict, equip and train community conservationists, increase our knowledge of the treatment and prevention of disease and educate people. In 2012, IEF will provide over $225,000 to support elephant conservation around the world, adding to the over $2 million total invested in conserving elephants since its inception in 1998.”The future for African and Asian elephants is in our hands,” said IEF Executive Director, Deborah Olson. “The elephants in zoos and circuses inspire support for the International Elephant Foundation. When someone sees, or perhaps touches, an elephant and gains a greater understanding of the animal he or she has known only from picture books and video, they are then motivated to take action to save these species from extinction.”
The mission of the IEF is to support and operate elephant conservation and education programs in managed facilities and in the wild, with emphasis on management, protection and scientific research. The members of IEF identify projects and funding to support elephant conservation programs consistent with the principles of the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), the American Zoo and Aquarium Association Taxon Advisory Group/Species Survival Plan (AZA TAG/SSP), the Species Management Programme (ASMP) of the Council of Governing Bodies of Australasian Zoos, the Joint Management of Species Group (JMSG) of the British Federation of Zoos, the Europaiesches Erhaltungszucht Programm (EEP) of European zoos, the African Propagation Program (APP) of the Pan African Association, the South East Asian Zoo Association (SEAZA), and the Indian Endangered Species Breeding Program of the Central Zoo Authority of India (IESBP).
