The Department of Higher Education and Training together with the National Research Foundation(NRF) are pleased to announce funding opportunity to pursue Masters and Doctoral studies for Students with Disabilities.
More than a decade ago, the South African government passed the Skills Development Act, which provides a framework for addressing the severe shortage of skills. In response to this mandate, the National Skills Fund (NSF) of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) commits grant funding on an annual basis to the National Research Foundation NRF) for the management of a postgraduate student funding programme, the Scarce Skills Development Fund (SSDF). The definition of a person with disabilities is defined according to The Code of Good Practice on Employment of People with Disabilities and the Employment Equity Act, 1998. In this round of applications, only students intending to study or studying towards research based Masters and Doctoral degrees will be considered for funding.
The objectives of the funding programme are–
- To facilitate access to higher education particularly for the previously disadvantaged sector of the population and students with disabilities
- To increase the number of South African postgraduate students in scarce skills disciplines
- In conjunction with the higher education sector and industry, to support the development of postgraduate courses to meet specific needs of the country.
Eligibility–
Only students intending to study or studying towards research based Master’s and Doctoral degrees will be considered for funding to increase the number of South African postgraduate students in scarce skills disciplines.
How to apply for funding?
- Applications must be submitted through an online application system to the NRF.
- Applicants can apply for the NRF Disability Masters and Doctoral Scholarship Call for 2013 by accessing the link given in the website.
- Register/ Login using your ID number and password.
- Select create new application from the list of existing calls.
- Select the call for which applicants are applying to: NRF Disability Masters and Doctoral Scholarship Call for 2013
- Remember to complete all sections of the application form.
- Please attach the necessary documents in one PDF file in the following order: ID document and certified academic transcripts, medical certificate indicating disability.
- If applicant will not follow the guidelines for attaching the necessary documents with their application will not be considered.
- Remember to submit application on completion.
- Complete applications will go to the host university, for verification before being forwarded to the NRF for further processing.
- Incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be considered (please refer to call document for details on eligibility for the NRF Disability Masters and Doctoral programme.
